Abstracting self portraits

Year 4 were working with the theme ‘Express yourself’ at the beginning of the year. We started by looking at the main face shapes and by drawing ourselves realistically using mirrors. We then moved on to introducing the idea of things being ‘Abstract’ and compared realistic and abstract portraits. Picasso’s portraits provided great examples of the way shapes can be found in faces and exaggerated.

Children added and exaggerated features of their faces in their sketchbooks before using layers of corrugated card to create their self portrait.

We enjoyed seeing how the two different sides of card could be used to create different textures on the face.

Children painted their faces using primary colours, adding patterns and details with marker pen.
